In Ms. Murphy's class Third graders enhance their mathematics foundation and move toward more consistent use of mental computation using supplement such as Imagine Math and BigBrainz. Key areas of study include place value, rounding numbers, developing fluency with multiplication and division facts, area, time, money, solid shapes, lines, angles, congruence, and addition and subtraction of fractions and decimals using manipulatives. Students relate mathematics to other areas of curriculum and identify real life applications of mathematics concepts, such as making change, telling time, and reading thermometers. Math fact fluency is the ability to recall the answers to basic math facts automatically and without hesitation. Fact fluency is gained through significant practice, with mastery of basic math facts being a goal of both teachers and parents.
