Kindergarten is where a love of literature is fostered. My students are exposed to many kinds of print...read alouds, big books, poetry, anchor charts, and sentence strips on pocket charts. The possibilities are endless. The goal is for them to enter 1st grade with a love of books. I would like to add a listening center for my students to use at center time.
Many of my kinders do not have the opportunity to listen to stories as they are tucked into bed at night. Therefore, it is my responsibility to give them multiple opportunities to listen to stories in school. What a great way to learn and retain information! We have literacy centers every day- abc, reading the room, teacher time, word work, writing, computers, big books, pocket charts, and read to self. The one thing that is missing is a listening center.
Four students at a time will be able to put on a set of headphones plugged into the cd player. The cd player will house CDs of children's literature. The children will be able to hold the book in their hands, follow along with the words, and look at the illustrations while listening to the matching cd. The wooden listen center station is an important piece of the project, as all of the materials, cd player, headphones, books, and CDs, will be kept in one place. My classroom is small so keeping everything organized in one place would be amazing. It would also allow students to independently set up and clean up.
