8th grade curriculum contains many opportunities to enrich mathematical problem solving through technology.
One of our biggest needs is to help the low socioeconomic population here in increasing their technology fluency and help them succeed in college and career readiness.
The most noteworthy learning application is related to understanding of linear equations and functions. The availability of Chromebooks for every student to utilize would enable my students to use online manipulatives as well as Desmos, a free online graphing calculator, to explore how functions behave visually and strengthen their understanding. The online graphing calculator would also enable students to explore the possibilities of nonlinear equations in order to make observations regarding the effects of exponents within an equation.
I wish to use Tenmarks to help build in practice that is aligned with the standardized assessments. This will especially help with my support population, as one of their biggest barriers to success is expressing their understanding using the technology. Increased exposure and understanding using technology will help narrow the achievement gap for these students and increase their confidence and success.
Adding 8 more Chromebooks to my class would increase my number of devices to 14. This will allow for a ratio of 2 students for each device and would help me build in the use of technology on a regular basis through partners and station activities.
