I currently teach 7th grade world history at a Title 1 school. Many of our students come from low socio-economic households. We have a large population of ELL (English language learners) students. The STEM program was introduced this year with great excitement and enthusiasm.
Due to budget cuts, Art has not been taught in any of the 3 district middle schools for nearly a decade. I am excited to be introducing the first STEAM classes in our district, one each for grades 6 8 at the beginning of the 2017 2018 academic year.
Introducing a subject like art back into the curriculum requires a large amount of funding initially. Thanks to the foresight of our Principal, who sees the value of the arts, and allocated funds, we have purchased the basic materials needed to get started. Unfortunately, there are so many items that would enhance the STEAM program, but are just beyond our budget.
