The Lucy Calkins's reading program requires teachers to have a leveled classroom library for students to use, throughout the units of study. The books given will be leveled and organized in a way that all students, no matter what reading level they are on, will have a book in their hands daily. We will use the classroom library books, every day, for guided and mini reading instruction. The Lucy Calkins's reading program uses assessments to monitor, to make sure students are succeeding. Without the books, we will not see success. Our students are not performing at the reading level they need to be at, currently, due to the lack of books. This program has been involved in multiple studies, and is proven to help readers improve reading skills far greater than any other program. The books will help with the differentiation of students by giving them many high interest text to choose from, that are on their level to read, and will help improve knowledge and reading skills. A man of wide reading is a man of culture. A book is a student's companion. It helps to define their imagination.
