Freedom Crossing is a novel that tells about slaves that tried to escape to freedom in a period before the Civil War (1861-1865). The story involves the Underground Railroad which was a secret network of trails and homes that helped slaves from the Southern United States escape to Canada. The story takes place in Lewiston, which is the final stop for escaping slaves from the South. Lewiston is located 7 miles north of Niagara Falls, New York. It is situated on the Niagara River, across from Canada. The students will fall in love with the book and then we will take a field trip to the site, which will bring history alive.
