Music is more meaningful when it tells a tale. Whenever I sing a story, even my most rambunctious students lean in to listen with quiet, rapt attention. I will use these books in a whole group setting. I plan to introduce these folk tunes, like "My Aunt Came Back," and popular songs, like "Octopus's Garden" by singing to the students a cappella. We will practice singing together and watch videos of the Beatles, John Denver, Bob Marley, and other musicians performing these songs. In following lessons, we will gather around the books for story time.
My students will be eager to sing the familiar lyrics while they enjoy the beautiful illustrations in these books. The books will help these song stories develop in my students' imaginations and keep the tunes vivid in their memories. I am sure that they will ask to read and sing the books again and again. I hope that they feel ownership of these songs and that they will use their voices to pass these songs down to children when they are grown-ups.
