I am the art teacher in an urban Pre-K through 8th grade school. We have general education students, English Language Learners, and students with disabilities who need special education services, but they all have one thing in common -- they love ART! Being able to express themselves creatively is an outlet for many of my students who may struggle academically or socially.
I work hard to come up with interdisciplinary projects that reinforce the learning in the classroom in a fun, engaging way. Unfortunately, this is very challenging on a limited budget. I recycle everything -- egg cartons, yogurt containers, lids, cardboard -- another person's trash is usually my treasure! This also shows my students how to recycle and be resourceful, as we do not always have access to real canvases or art palettes. However, I want my students to be able to have the rich experiences with art materials that they deserve!
