I currently work in an extreme low-income area where our middle school students come to school with a variety of difficulties. Almost 70% of our school is considered "at-risk" of not graduating due to their poverty stricken circumstances. Over 90% of our population is Hispanic and limited in their English proficiency.
These students are in great need in every aspect of their lives: love, compassion, patience, and a genuinely safe learning environment. They can be a rough bunch, but through discipline, fairness and compassion, I have been able to connect with many of my students. I have been working at the same school for ten years and I have loved every single challenging minute of it. Although my students have been handed a tough hand in life, their resiliency continues to amaze me. I will continue to fight for them every single day.
