The idea of sitting at a table all day doing work makes me cringe. I cannot imagine having my only option of getting my work done to be doing it at a short table sitting on a hard chair. Even the option of standing at that table would still require me to be bending over. Sadly, up until this time, that was the situation my students have found themselves in. They are allowed to stand at their table or desk but that requires bending. The chairs we are provided from our district are hard, heavy and not at all comfortable.
Our children's needs are changing, and it is time for me to change with them. I want to provide my students with options for getting their work done. I have already purchased with my own money tall tables for those students who work best standing up. However, to meet the needs of all of my students, especially those who struggle with traditional seating and sitting still, I would love to purchase some furniture that supports those kids' needs. Balance balls and Hokki stools allow students to stay in one spot while still having the ability to move to release energy. Students who still like to sit at traditional seating but need to expel energy can do so with the use of a bouncy band or Wobble cushion.
I know that having flexible seating in my classroom would make the students enjoy doing their work so much more. Not only would they have seating options, but they would get to CHOOSE what works best for them. I know that giving them that power will have a positive impact on their learning.
