I want my students to feel successful despite their challenges. When I have to put taped together, mismatched, ragged books in their hands, we all feel like we are starting at an even further disadvantage. New books that are interesting, challenging and on-par with peers create a positive start to the reading experience!
Stocking the shelves with great books will encourage reading. I chose many books that are firsts in a series so that students may be encouraged to continue on their own when a book interests them. I also want to pepper their reading with exposure to classics that can be fun, engaging, and thought provoking.
