Our school has a high population of students in special education programs. Many of these students are mainstreamed into the general education classrooms, but most of them lack the basic skills needed to succeed in higher level math classrooms. This is where the game of cribbage comes in.
The game of cribbage teaches critical thinking skills, basic math skills, communication and cooperation with others. It allows students to practice their addition, subtraction and multiplication while having fun. The best part is they don't even realize they are learning!
I would like to teach the game of Cribbage to my small math lab class (15 students that are also in my gen ed classes.) Once the lab students are confident in the game they can help me introduce it to the gen ed classes. This is where they can shine by being the one to teach someone else a new twist on math. I can't wait to see them shine.
