I teach four sections of general science (2 sections 7th grade, 2 sections 8th grade). Class sizes range from 16-22 students. More than 60% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch. I love my students. They bring energy, humor, and really want to make personal connections with the adults around them. I want to help them grow as individuals and learners. Struggles with focus and fixed mindsets about their own capabilities are key obstacles. The students and I have talked about identifying our strengths and needs, and then taking positive steps to support ourselves as learners. Students led a discussion during which they identified several changes to the classroom they felt would make it more comfortable and learner-friendly. I was so impressed to see them really start to take ownership over their own learning. I am hoping that I can provide them with some of the changes they are hoping to see.
