A big idea I try to convey in teaching To Kill a Mockingbird is that whether or not we want to believe it, all humans are guilty of applying stereotypes or prejudice to individuals. I emphasize that it is OKAY to do that, since it is human nature, but that once we catch ourselves doing it, it is NOT OKAY to perpetuate that behavior.
My students complete a lesson paired with this novel in which they analyze their perceptions of themselves, as well as how others perceive them, in a creation of an identity map. We discuss that perception is what yields judgement; therefore, students are able to empathize with the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird and are able to employ a new lens throughout the rest of the novel.
