My district has been faced with major budget cutbacks over the past consecutive three years. As a result, not only have staff members been cut, but programs have also been reduced to bare bones. The kids now have one or two study halls per day where they once had classes like General Music, Business, Tech, or Art. As a result, I am always looking for ways to accommodate large groups of middle schoolers who have too much time on their hands. I have begun a Math Club and would like to incorporate the games of Blokus, Chess, and Qwirkle to teach and reinforce skills of logic, problem-solving, strategy, cooperation, and sportsmanship. I plan on teaching the games to the students and running tournaments once all students become comfortable with the rules of play. Skill-building is inherent within the gameplay, and each of these games is award-winning in terms of their educational benefits.
