One of the growing trends in education over the last few years has been flexible seating. When we really look at the reasoning behind it, we wonder why we did not think about this sooner! Researchers are finding that the learning process is enhanced greatly by physical exercise. Even as adults, sitting in a chair for more than a short time span of 10 minutes creates fatigue. Students are more and more restless and unable to concentrate, often leading to disruptive behaviors in and out of the classroom.
Flexible seating will allow my students the ability to wiggle AND learn at the same time! We currently have 3 stand up desks, 3 yoga mats, and a few throw pillows in our classroom. We have successfully used each and every one of these options every day this year. My goal is to provide more options (and opportunities) for my students to use flexible seating on a regular basis.
