My students take pride in their work and learning! When they complete a new work, a particularly challenging project, or a good writing piece, they make portfolio pages to enter into their portfolios. They include illustrations, embellishments, photos, and reflections on their learning. They then put them in page protectors and, currently, put them in white binders. Although these binders are functional, they are not beautiful books that they children can cherish. If we have lovely scrapbooks, not only will the children love them more, but after three years in the same classroom they will have a record of their learning, experiences, and growth over time.
By donating these blank albums you will help my students take pride in their work and growth, communicate their learning with their parents, engage in meta-cognition, and have a collection of 3 years of experience they can keep their whole life! Meta-cognition, or thinking about one's own learning, is an important aspect of helping children be life long learners. Using portfolios as a form of alternative assessment and self-reflection engage children in their own education.
Logistically, these albums are better than three-ring-binders because their pages can be on 11 X 11 inch paper instead of 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper which gives them more room to display work, reflect, and embellish. I know that by having these albums the level of care and engagement in their work will only increase! Thank you!
