Many of my students lack the experiences and resources at home to acquire the English language. Research states one way students learn best is through realia to make meaning of the real world. Therefore, it is important my English Learners are expose to rich language through role play, realia (real life objects or experiences), and models or examples to acquire the English Language. My students will use the materials to explore various food groups, use rich English language to describe, organize, and explain each type of food. They will also use the resources to role play real-life experiences such as family dinner gatherings, food during the holidays, buying from the market, and many other. We also use the materials to support math by learning how to add and subtract, sort, and determine the value of money.
The donation to this project will help my English Learners in my district to acquire the English Language through meaningful interaction by providing modules of real-life foods. I have seen my students eyes light up when they can touch and manipulate materials. Visuals and videos are a great way to introduce and build students' background knowledge, but it can never give the experience like being able to feel the different texture and through role play.
