The purpose of this project is to provide an immersive, hands-on educational experience for students at Buckner through the use of virtual reality technologies. There are several ways in which VR technology can impact learning. It allows students to visualize abstract concepts, and to visit environments that would otherwise be impossible. This technology promotes current educational research that shows students are better able to master, retain, and generalize new knowledge when they are actively involved in constructing that knowledge in a hands on learning environment.
Virtual lessons are well-suited for all types of learning and helps students understand complex subjects for which they have no frame of reference. For example, a unit on habitats could be enhanced by taking the class on a virtual field trip to various habitats, where they could explore close-up.
All equipment will be housed in the library, and available for all teachers to check out and use as needed to support classroom instruction. In addition, VR will be used in the library, giving all students the opportunity to explore and make connections to topics of interest. The goal of this project is to enhance learning and increase retention in all curricular areas.
