I have my students sit on the floor during our class meeting as well as when I am teaching a whole-group lesson at the board. I had a carpet but it was old and stained due to students coming in with dirty shoes or from bathroom accidents.
I want my students to have a clean spot to sit when they are engaged in our classroom meetings and when I am teaching. These varying seating options such as bean bags and yoga mats will also allow them to create their own space while sitting on the floor. They can also use these cushions when working independently around the room. It will allow choice and flexibility for where they work.
