My project includes novel sets such as The Cay, The Watsons Go to Birmingham, One Crazy Summer, Roll of Thunder, and a few others. My students are in need of class sets of these novels so that they may become more engaged in their learning. My students who have special needs need the audio books for additional support. I also have several ESL students who can benefit from the audio books as well. My students will connect to the characters in these books because many of the characters are the same age and ethnicity as the large majority of my students. My students will relate to and connect with the characters interactions, circumstances, and thinking throughout the novels. This leads to engagement and a deeper understanding of the skills taught by using the text. Students will learn about the Civil Rights Movement, the Great Depression, racism, family, survival, and perseverance by reading and discussing these texts. I feel like my project is important because I want to respect the culture of my students and this project provides texts that are culturally relevant and they can definitely relate to the characters!
