Students have difficult enough time focusing in this digital age. Then add sitting in an uncomfortable seat for hours on hours listening to a teacher go blah blah blah. Why do we go to coffee shops to hang out or do our homework as adults? Flexible seating has been amazingly successful this year in my classroom, however as teacher and mom I can only go so far in funding it. Many of the options I have used this year were great in the beginning but were not made to hold up with everyday use and abuse.
The seats I am asking for in this grant are much better quality and will hold up to the daily use of my students. Students love having choices in the classroom. Who likes to be told what to do? This year has shown me my students are excited to come to class and pick "the seat" they have been wanting all week. I am hoping to keep my students excited to come to school and be a part of the learning in order to make school fun and the best environment for them!
In fact, a paper by Matthew T. Mahar, et al finds that: Simple in-class activities can boost performance. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, with the best improvement seen in students who are least on-task initially. Many studies have shown improve test scores and attendance at schools who have changed to Flexible seating at their schools.
I look forward to giving my students future options and the best options out their to improve learning and test scores in my classroom!
