My students come to school with a great deal of energy and a great deal of emotions. Excitement, anxiety, anger, exhaustion, jubilance-all of these are hard for an eight year old to fit behind a desk!
Kids work better when movement is incorporated. My students love to find spaces to read and write away from their traditional chair and desk. They lay under their desks, lean over the bookcases, or slide into a cubby to do some writing or reading. The shift always amazes me: when they choose a spot where they are comfortable, their attention and engagement soar.
I envision a classroom where each child has a spot that fits their needs on any given day. In addition to the traditional desks and chairs, students can choose from floor mats, wobble stools, bean bag chairs, lap trays to take somewhere comfortable, even bands for chair and desk legs to encourage and support movement in these young ladies and gentlemen. I want their energy and individual preferences to work FOR them.
