I'm often baffled when I talk to people who think a kindergarten class, or any class for that matter, should be quiet and working at desks. Kindergarten provides the opportunity to grow and develop through play — the way children learn best.
Teachers can no longer expect 5 and 6 year old children, with all their energy and enthusiasm, to sit at their desks or to be quiet all day. For one thing, it's boring! But most importantly, every child learns differently and should be allowed to explore what works best for them.
One day last year, I stepped back and really studied my students. I learned that they were antsy and unfocused. So, I started introducing balance balls and lap desks in my classroom. My students had the freedom to choose how they worked. WOW...what a difference it made! They were engaged and much more focused.
I want to create a learning environment that allows for options and feels like home. I want to make a cozy corner in my classroom, where students can choose to work. The wobble stools will provide stimulation for those students that have difficulty sitting still. The wiggle motion meets their sensory needs and gives the child better ability to focus. Other students, work best when standing. The two desks will be utilized as standing work stations. The adjustable chairs that come with the desks will also be used in the cozy corner as alternative seating. It's time for me to put my traditional classroom setup in the storage room, and bring out one that works for all students.
