My students don't have many learning experiences outside of school. Their parents are working long hours and have no time or money to show them the world they are so excited to discover. Books in Spanish are difficult to find and very expensive. We don't have many nonfiction books in our classroom.
TIME for Kids will open a window to my kids to the real world. As we all know, there has been a growing realization of the importance of helping children learn strategies for reading the nonfiction texts they will increasingly be faced with in the upper grades. Early exposure to the language of nonfiction can help enhance children's understanding of exposition and may prevent the difficulties many students encounter with these texts later on.
My students also have a very limited vocabulary and this will definitively help them to extend it. These books can open the interest about so many subjects. I can just picture them sitting on the carpet talking about what they just discovered. I am so excited to get these books! They can be the key to so many different activities and projects!
