One area that my students struggle in is vocabulary. It鈥檚 no secret that reading increases your vocabulary and improves your spelling, but did you know that reading increases your vocabulary more than talking or direct teaching? Reading forces us to look at words that we might not have seen or heard recently. In fact, the language in children鈥檚 books is likely to be more sophisticated than your average conversation.
I'm requesting a variety of fiction and non-fiction book sets including Go Figure! Math Series, What Was? DK Eyewitness, Who Was?, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Dork Diaries for our classroom library. Having these books will give my students more choice in what they read.
Reading can also help prioritize goals. Many times we鈥檙e certain we know what we 鈥渞eally want鈥 in life. Yet I鈥檝e found that activities like reading show students things they didn鈥檛 know about themselves. Reading can open students eyes to many different opportunities that they otherwise might not know exist.
