I teach a group of high energy and motivated first graders. I teach at a title 1 school in Reno, NV. 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch, many of my students receive backpack food on the weekend.
Despite many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best.
Our school has a strong focus on literacy. Being from a low-income environment often makes reading very difficult, since many of them do not have exposure to much text or high level vocabulary before they enter school. Some students come into my classroom without knowing any letter sounds, but they focus and work hard on their decoding skills to become strong readers by the end of the year.
We give them the tools to do this, but they do the hard work! I am so proud of the students that come through our school. They want to do well in school and learn all they can so they can be successful one day.
