There are few things that high school students care about as much as music. Many of my students feel the music they listen to expresses something fundamental about who they are at their cores. This year I will use this passion to my advantage, challenging my students to explore the personal, societal, and artistic impact of the music they feel defines them.
The Rap Yearbook will be my relevant, high-interest textbook for teaching persuasive writing. This book will hook my students and reveal to them the art of persuasion. This is the textbook high school classrooms have long been missing.
Persuasive writing is the key to passing Texas's high stakes English test--a requirement for graduation. Rather than writing to seemingly generic persuasion prompts, my students will instead dig into something they care about passionately. I believe I can use this book to challenge and inspire my students to step up their persuasion game.
