A rug in our classroom will give us a place to gather as a class. Currently, there is not one. A rug would allow us to have class meetings and allow us to do lessons as a group, versus students scattered at their desks. When you think about a learning community the physical environment can have a positive impact.
In particular, I would like to be able to teach daily writing lessons on the rug with students. I would like them to be able to bring their work to the rug and share it as we go through lessons. Additionally, the rug would serve as another workspace for students. The option of flexible seating is always desirable in any classroom, and fifth graders like that autonomy to choose where they work. This would increase those options.
A rug that is also a United States map is a bonus- students will be able to learn the states and their locations throughout the year. This will be another way to get them excited and help bring context to their learning.
