CICS Basil is a high-performing charter school in the Back of the Yards neighborhood of Chicago. Our curriculum is driven by the high-stakes testing our scholars face throughout the year. While this curriculum sets our students up for success on these standardized tests, it leaves us little extra time for subjects such as Science and Social Studies.
Students will research an animal of their choosing, publish an informational text, and create a visual representation of their research to display and present at our Research Fair to their friends and families.
Our students are exposed to informational texts through our curriculum. However, our students have limited access to hard-copy books. This is where we need your help! With your support, we will expand our classroom library to include a variety of encyclopedias from which students can research their chosen animal. This will expose scholars to a wealth of knowledge to which they may not otherwise have access.
So, what else do we need from you? We need supplies so that students can create a final project in the form of an informational text and a poster presentation for our Research Fair. We are asking you for blank books for students to fill with their research, tri-fold poster boards for their presentation, and supplies to decorate them. This will empower students and allow them to see the fruits of their hard work!
This project will help students master common core standards that may not be assessed on standardized tests, but are essential to student success in their future educational careers and in life!
