I am requesting these materials, because I am tired of boring worksheets. We will work in centers and these hands on activities will help the students to understand the different concepts we are learning in class. The math manipulatives will help us to build number sense and learn to add and subtract. We will learn out to correctly use base ten blocks to build the foundation for understanding place value. The reading centers will help us be able to manipulate words, learn to stretch them out and learn to spell them. This helps us grow our reading comprehension and vocabulary development.
First graders are not made to sit still and do worksheets, they need to be able to touch the materials and manipulate them to build critical skills needed. I am wanting to bring engaging centers into my classroom to have authentic learning take place, and not just "sit down and fill out this worksheet." Every child learns differently and using hands on materials for centers will help all students to stay engaged and love learning. Having students be able to use their own hands to use materials will help them to stay engaged and love school. Being engaged and excited about school will create an environment that will foster children who come to school because they want to learn.
