Students will be able to model the movement of tectonic plates using Play-Doh. We can simulate the location of tectonic plates during Pangea and explore current movement and the future continental layout.
Our class can use this kit to understand the evidence found for Pangea and explain different tectonic features on Earth including mountains, valleys, and earthquakes.
I typically teach this lesson using cutouts of paper, but I feel that this project will help students gain a better kinesthetic understanding of plate tectonics as they see the Play-Doh change under different forces.
This project can also be used to teach convergent, divergent, and transform plate boundaries as students see the effects of each boundary on the Play-Doh.
