The materials I am hoping to get will allow students to move around the classroom and learn where it is most comfortable for them. There will no longer be students sitting on hard chairs at desks. They will now be able to choose where and what to sit on, or even stay standing at high tables. I am hoping to phase out the traditional seating in my classroom, because I feel it is the most unnatural way for students to comfortably learn. I hope to have one table up high, so students that want to stand to work have that option. There will be a table very low to the ground with soft pillows to sit on for kids that feel most comfortable on the ground. I want to have bean bag chairs with lap desks for students who may be feeling tired or are having a stressful day. I will also have wobble chairs (for kids who cannot sit still), fidget bands for kids to bounce their feet, and exercise balls for kids that need to bounce. They will get to move around throughout the day.
Sometimes adults forget that children are people too. They have good and bad days. The have areas of their life that make it hard to want to learn (home situations, friends, and their responsibilities). As adults, we see their problems as "not a big deal", but a child's perception is their reality. I want students to walk into my classroom with a sigh of relief. Learning can be fun, inviting, and relaxed. Every student truly learns in different ways, and flexible seating will allow them to be themselves without even realizing they are learning.
