I have teamed up with Kentucky Reading Project this year to design a curriculum unit that promotes literacy in a creative way. My 1st graders, 40% of which are immigrants, refugees or ESL students, will travel continent to continent and explore different cultures around the globe. Students will be engaged through music, food, literature and a special non-fiction animal unit. Students will research one animal a week that habitats in that continent. iPads will be a huge help for teams of two to take turns researching animals on their own. It will give them a sense of independence in their own project and learning.
I also think it will be awesome to have kiddos record their reading to assess their strategies and fluency. Students could play other student's videos to hear a story from a friend!
