Taft High School serves the educational, social, and emotional needs of a diverse student body in the Norwood Park neighborhood of Chicago. Our student body comes from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds and has immigrated here from all over the world. I serve students entering high school in the 9th grade as a World Studies teacher. The course is a survey on the history of the world and is rooted in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP). The curriculum encourages the students to build meaningful connections to the past and assess their role as citizens in their local, state, national, and global communities. My classroom is collaborative in nature and the students are encouraged to engage with one another throughout each day. I attempt to foster a caring, open-minded, and safe space for my students to explore their identities and build meaningful relationships with one another.
