All of my students (K-6) would highly benefit from a warm and comfortable space to discover what the library has to offer and to enjoy a good book. Having flexible seating options for my students will not only allow them to feel comfortable and welcomed, it will give them some sense of control of their learning. It will be up to them to choose where they will sit to do their best. This kind of space will encourage my students to read and to spend more time in the library.
Often it is difficult to encourage students to stay engaged with a book when they are sitting on a hard chair at a desk.
I've found that some of the immediate benefits of flexible seating include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. It's no surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior.
All I want to do is promote my library in a positive way and inspire a passion for reading in my students. Flexible seating would provide my students just that and is only the beginning of my library makeover.
I am hoping to purchase seating options such as lap desks, clipboards, crates to make seats, wobble cushions, laptop computer desk and table, stools, and a rug. All of these items will give my students the freedom to sit and stand (using the laptop desk) wherever they choose while still having a surface to work on and use the Chromebooks.
