I've noticed over the years that students have a tendency to shy away from reading. I've heard every excuse from "I don't have time" to "I just don't like it." As an English teacher and avid book lover, this breaks my heart -- and drives me to make a change.
The truth is, books are the cheapest vacation you can take -- they can take you literally anywhere, from Wonderland to Panem, Neverland to the center of the Earth. My goal is to guide my students to love reading, and I believe that part of achieving that goal is to give them a choice in what they read. If they are anything like me, the moment they are told they have to read a particular title, they are turned off to it -- whether or not it's one they would enjoy.
I've researched multiple lists of novels for reluctant readers and I've compiled a list that is eclectic and relevant to the students I teach. Many of these selections include issues that impact these students daily: bullying, peer pressure, identity crisis, love, just to name a few. My students will be choosing a title and reading it on their own, outside of class, as well as completing assignments and collaborating with each other to explore central idea and real world issues within the texts.
Please consider donating to this project, which will continue to benefit students for years to come. With your help, we can build a generation of book lovers!
