My students are in need of some wiggle room! My class was given six balance balls as an option for seating while learning last year. In order for every student to be able to use the balance balls at least twice a day, I placed them at my small group teacher table. This way, students were able to use them during small group instruction for Reading and Math. The rules were clear; students were allowed to lightly and quietly bounce on the balls as long as they were listening and participating in our learning experiences. These balance balls were a perfect way to allow students to relax in a wiggle space while also learning.
I noticed a HUGE improvement in the focus and on-task behaviors of my students, especially those who required frequent movement breaks, while at my rotations during Math and Reading small groups! I am therefore requesting 11 more flexible seating options to add to the choice I am able to provide my students in their learning spaces. I have an exact plan for each item. The padded stools will be placed at a small group table at which students will work on group projects, read in groups, and obtain help from a reading specialist, teacher assistant, or parent volunteer. The yoga pillows will be placed at various independent reading spaces around the classroom. The bean bag chairs will be placed at lowered student desks and be used as a seating option for any student in need.
These flexible seating options will encourage the academic successes of all my students (no matter their socioeconomic status) by providing them with more opportunity to focus and be GREAT!
