Many students want to do something good for someone else. This project pairs schools with children who need "A Helping Hand." The students would be responsible for making measurements and creating a usable prosthetic hand for a child. Students would learn the value of taking careful measurements, keeping good notes, and writing a program to print the parts of the hand.
Students would have an opportunity to use what they learn in Physics class and apply it to a real-world solution. Students could then add this project to their portfolio or resume. I believe this 3D printer would make a long-term impact on my students. They would remember that they did something good beyond themselves.
Students will also be asked to design unique solutions to everyday problems (i.e. cell phone stands, knobs, gadgets, widgets, etc.) I also teach Art, so a student can also overlap Art curriculum into Physics.
