Students in the middle school program are avid readers, they read anything and everything they can get their hands on. In order to continue to cultivate this love of learning and reading, we have established a reading library to provide continued access to grade appropriate reading materials.
The donations for this project will go toward adding fun and interesting grade level fiction books to the new middle school program's reading library. With the additional middle school books, we can facilitate student led book club discussions and book talks using critical thinking questions and presentation skills. We would implement targeted reading strategies to break down difficult texts that would lead to more independent reading. Allowing students to select from their own interests provides ownership over learning, and fosters a life-long love of reading. In addition to improved reading skills, research has proven that the more students read, the more their writing skills improve.
