I hope to offer my reading groups more books written by diverse authors about diverse characters who face challenging circumstances, both in their personal and professional lives. My students live in a small, increasingly-urban town in the country's smallest state, and a lot of their reading experience is rooted in YA texts about people who look like them. I want to push their understanding about human nature in a variety of situations.
These texts will open my students to different perceptions of the world and will challenge their assumed beliefs about their place in society, both now and in the future.
