I am requesting a larger meeting area for my students. We have a carpet, but it is much to small for our growing class sizes. Many times throughout the day, I ask my students to come to the carpet. We are either having a classroom meeting, learning a new concept, going over directions, or listening to a story.
Being together on the carpet helps to build a community in the classroom where each child's voice is heard. It also allows me to gauge which students are excelling and which ones will need additional support when we move to independent work time. When students are on the carpet together, they are able to hear others ideas. They are more likely to participate and remain engaged in whatever the topic of conversation.
