Many of my students have never read a full chapter book before coming to my classroom. I want to give my whole class experience with a novel (or two!) before sending them off to middle school. We will read the books as a whole class, a small group, and as individuals. The goal being that all students read the entire books and feel confident about their learning.
The books I have chosen are related to our social studies standards so that students can explore culture and understanding in a historical perspective. I also want students to have the perspective of both a hero and heroine. One of the books is told from a Native American perspective and the other a young man growing up in revolutionary America.
These are both higher level text that will stretch everyone's needs and expand their thinking about both reading and history.
