As I look around my classroom, I see children who are disconnected from their community. By understanding how to forge links with their neighbors, the students will learn to become valuable members of their communities.
In this unit, students will read the book, "The Summer I Saved the World," discuss how the character helps her neighbors, and why it is so important that she does it anonymously. Hopefully, each student will then be able to think of things that do not cost money to do around their immediate neighborhood. As a class, we will then focus on how they feel after completing the "good deeds," and how they have grown as a person.
