Twice a day, my kiddos go to centers, which is a time for the students to participate in activities around the classroom that support the academic content being taught throughout the week. Providing books on CD at a variety of reading levels and interests, in addition to a seating area that’s designated only for the listening library, will further enhance their learning during their center time.
Because most of my kiddos are not yet able to read, hearing a book read on CD will help them see how the words on the page can come alive while providing them an alternate way to build listening, reading, and comprehension skills.
Not only will this project provide a model of fluent reading and introduce new vocabulary, it will also allow my kiddos to find reading enjoyable and fun. Since books on CDs tend to make the story more alive and fun by using silly voices and sound effects, my kiddos will find reading to be a pleasure, not just a skill that needs to be learned.
