Our classroom is made up of a diverse range of learners ALL learning a second language. In our immersion program students who come from English, bilingual and Spanish-at-home backgrounds are blended together to learn in both their native and second languages. Emphasis is provided on strengthening their native language so that they may transfer over their skills to their second language. The majority of students come to school as dominant Spanish speakers but often lack academic vocabulary. They leave our school fluent in both languages ready to take on the world! Our job is to provide them with quality instruction that emphasizes academic vocabulary, starting with their native language then adding in English so they can bridge their knowledge over since things are much easier to comprehend when you already have that understanding in their first language. In order to do this we need authentic books to read!
