I teach a diverse group of 1st graders in California who come from a range of socioeconomic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds -- over 50% are emergent bilingual students and approximately half come from low income homes.
A significant focus in our classroom is oral language -- students need to learn how to explain their ideas verbally before they can write those ideas and before they can read those ideas.
