I teach in a small urban city in Michigan. This district was shut down due to budget cuts and lack of funding so they were forced to annex. The neighboring district took them over, including the buildings, staff, students, etc. The elementary children before this annex were placed in a high school building which was not properly suited for them. Currently, we are teaching in a building that was vacant for three years. This school was not ready to open. On the first day, the school flooded because the sewer was not used to so much traffic. My school is fighting everyday to be equal to their peers. For most of our children, school is the only safe place for them. We are dealing with major issues that most don't even have to think about, such as, drugs, homelessness, poverty, abuse, etc. Our school is the only title school is the district now. Us teachers do everything we can for these children on a daily basis.
