Our students have a unique learning style and sensory overload may be difficult for most of us to appreciate. Sometimes the general classroom (chair and desk) is just not conducive for our students. Imagine putting a desk in the middle of a tunnel during rush hour traffic and listening to a teacher teach. How much knowledge would you gain with the flashing lights and honking horns? This is an example of what students with Autism may be experiencing while sitting in a classroom. It is just uncomfortable. I would like our classroom to be set up in order to meet the needs of my students. Having many different varieties of seats such as Big Joe chairs, Wobble chairs, and Wobble Cushions can support the students learning needs. I would also like to include a shag rug for the students to sit on during carpet time to meet some of their sensory needs. Lastly, I would like to create a privacy seating place using a curtain so the students will not be distracted by the environment around them. Turning that tunnel into a place of peace and comfort can drastically improve how the student behaves emotionally and academically.
