Mathematics does not only have to be worksheets. The aim of the project is to support students’ learning by using manipulatives. Students will have the opportunity to apply math concepts to concrete objects such as cubes and counters which is based on the concrete representational abstract. These resources will be invaluable for students with different learning strengths and activating background knowledge. The manipulative can represent objects that students are familiar with in their lives and allows opportunities for students to engage in kinesthetic learning. My math classroom will have students use multiple representation in their work. They will need to be able to show their work and solution using verbal, visual, and symbols. Students will be able to successfully use this skill when they transition from SLIFE (Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education) Spanish math to SEI math classes.
My project will support my students by building a growth mindset and becoming critical thinkers by providing resources that are geared in helping them develop as mathematicians and scholars. Having a growth mindset in math allows students to learn from their mistakes, ask for help, and motivated to find new solutions. The whiteboard is an important tool for students as they develop their writing skills as well as working through a problem. Each whiteboard has two sides. One side for students to practice their writing skills and the back side for students to work through math problems. All of the supplies are geared for developing student skills and mathematical knowledge.
